With 72 drivers entered, position placement was held at the Old Saint Joes Yard in the center of town.

This morning is the Nome-Golovin Race.
190 miles across tundra and snow drifts,
the best drivers can average 100 mph!
This morning the winds are picking up,
making the visability less than desireable
but these guys on the penensula have proven,
they are animals,
So while they finished up the race order,
I headed out toward safety, 20 minuets before 12.

2_0324.jpg It seemed to me, as I crossed the Nome river at Fort Davis,
that the winds were actually worse in Nome than here on the trail.

But better is relative;
At 60 mph I felt like the wind was blowing
my sled sidewise off each bump,
and it really felt like I was riding a jet ski
on choppy water instead of a snowmachine.

This was the last fish camp I passed before
I settled in behind the Cape, and waited....

4_0188.jpg" at 15 after 1pm I realized they were not coming,

So after an hour and a half waiting,
I headed to the safety roadhouse,
which was opened just for the event,
a comfortable place for a checkpoint!
I thought I could warm up a bit,
and gather some info at the same time.
